Upside Down Text Generator

Type something above and the Upside Down style turns it over. Hello World comes back as plɹoM ollǝH, which reads correctly if you rotate your screen 180 degrees. It is real text, so it pastes into a comment, a bio or a message like anything else.

How does upside down text work?

Two steps, and the second one surprises people. First each character is swapped for a Unicode character that happens to look like it rotated: a becomes ɐ, e becomes ǝ, h becomes ɥ. Then the entire string is reversed, because when you physically turn text upside down the last letter ends up on the left.

That reversal is why plɹoM ollǝH looks scrambled until you rotate it. Without it, a flipped word would read backwards when you turned your screen.

Where do the upside down letters come from?

From other writing systems, mostly. Unicode has no upside-down alphabet, so a flipper borrows characters that happen to look right. ɐ and ǝ are from the International Phonetic Alphabet, ɹ is a phonetic r, ʞ is a Latin letter used in African orthographies, and ן in some sets is a Hebrew letter.

This is why the result is not perfectly uniform. Each borrowed character was designed for a different purpose at a slightly different weight and width, so a flipped sentence looks a little uneven compared to ordinary text. There is no way around it short of Unicode adding a dedicated alphabet.

What is the difference between upside down, mirror and reversed text?

They are three separate things and people often ask for one meaning another.

• Upside down rotates 180 degrees: glyphs are flipped and the order is reversed. Hello becomes ollǝH.
• Mirror flips horizontally only, as if held up to a mirror. Some letters change, many do not.
• Reversed leaves every letter alone and only reverses the order. Hello becomes olleH.

If you want the classic party trick, you want Upside Down. If you want something that still reads letter by letter, Reversed is the one.

Do numbers flip too?

Most of them. Digits have upside-down lookalikes in Unicode and the generator uses them, so a number comes back flipped along with the letters.

A few are better than others. 0 and 8 are symmetrical so they are unchanged, 6 and 9 simply swap, and 1, 2, 3 and 7 have good matches. The remaining digits use the closest available character, which is where the result looks least convincing. If a flipped number has to look right, check it before you use it.

Where does upside down text work?

In any field that stores plain text: comments, captions, bios, display names, messages and forum posts. It is popular as a novelty in Instagram captions and Discord messages, and as a way to hide a punchline until someone bothers to turn their phone.

It fails in the usual places: usernames and handles that validate characters, search boxes, and anything that has to be machine-read. It is also invisible to search, since ollǝH and Hello share no characters at all.

Can people read upside down text?

Easily, if they want to. Rotating a phone is enough, and pasting it back into this page flips it straight again since flipping twice returns the original. Treat it as a visual joke rather than a way to hide anything.

Screen readers get nothing useful from it at all. The characters are phonetic letters from other alphabets, so a reader announces them as those letters or skips them, and the sentence is lost. Do not put anything that matters in flipped text on its own.
